Slick Nick by Clinton Walker III
The past few months have been heaven on earth for Alabama football fans. On January 2007, Nick Saban became the new head football coach at the University of Alabama. Crimson tide supporters can breathe a sigh of relief with the hiring of an experience football coach. Saban has a good resume, highlighted with a BCS national championship in 2003 while coaching at Louisiana State University. Saban also has a reputation for revitalizing college football programs. Saban’s hiring has been the talk of Alabama and the sports nation. Nick Saban is a capable recruiter and head coach, but he has several flaws.
Because of Nick Saban’s brief success with the LSU tigers, many individuals have chosen to ignore his major character issues. The hiring of Saban clearly illustrates that integrity was not a qualification for head football coach at the University of Alabama.
Alabama football supporters are upset because most of the national media despises Nick Saban. In the state of Alabama, many fans mistakenly accuse the national media of an eastern bias and jealousy towards the University of Alabama. Those who believe those theories are ignoring the facts.
Nick Saban displayed zero class at handling the coaching situation with the Miami Dolphins. In reality, Nick Saban stole 10-million dollars from the Dolphins organization, leaving them without a coach and a losing record. Saban continuously lied to the press and Dolphins owner Wayne Hazinga about his intentions. His deceitfulness was disgraceful and a “middle finger” to the Miami community. Instead of earning his money by winning games, Saban decided to tuck his tail and run.
Nick Saban mentioned his “love for the college game” as the reason for breaking his contract with the Miami Dolphins. He failed to mention a 15-17 NFL record, and his failure to improve in his second season. Any reasonable sports fan should understand Nick Saban was in danger of being fired from Miami unless he produced wins the upcoming season. The combination of being on the “hot seat” and a desperate Alabama athletic department was perfect opportunity for Saban to prostitute himself. The disingenuous excuses for returning to college football should raise a huge “red flag” to Alabama supporters. Despite his coaching ability, Alabama supporters should wonder if Saban has the class that will lead to long-term success. Most Alabama media and fans have been extremely hypocritical by ignoring his exit strategy from Miami.
Dennis Francione was vilified by Alabama media and fans for leaving
for Texas A&M. The same individuals that crucified him are excusing Saban’s classless actions. Alabama fans are delusional thinking Saban will not put on his high heels and tight dress and prostitute himself in the future. Saban’s failure as Miami’s head coach proved he is not “man enough” to finish a task. Saban also proved he is not worth the 32-million dollar price tag.
Despite winning the 2003 national championship, Saban’s overall record is just above average. The year he won the BCS national championship, LSU lost to Florida and played an undeserving Oklahoma team that lost by 30 points in the Big 12 championship game. The national championship game was also played in the Sugar bowl, one hour from LSU’s campus. His coaching career includes several 5 and 6 lost seasons, a single one loss season, and zero undefeated seasons. Any coach capable of walking and chewing gum simultaneously should average 8 wins at LSU. Saban’s national championship does not guarantee championships at Alabama.
The groupie love shown to Nick Saban is similar to the way Michael Jackson was treated on his “Thriller tour”. A brawl would probably erupt if Saban threw his sweaty t-shirt into a crowd of Alabama sports media. Paul Finebaum, a popular Birmingham, Alabama sports talk show host is the head cheerleader in a squad praying Saban will peek under their skirts. Observing media personalities falling to their knees to praise Saban is quite nauseating to witness.
Saban is receiving an extreme amount of undeserved praise. He should not receive praise for signing autographs and speaking with the press on occasions. Nick Saban signed a 32-million dollar contract with duties that involve more than coaching football. Duties of a college football coach include signing autographs, speaking with the press, and occasionally participating in activities not enjoyable. For 32-million dollars, this poor Bobby Knight impersonator should avoid being on his “period” during press conferences.
Early indications reveal Alabama football supporters are willing to sell their souls for a few victories. Ignoring Nick Saban’s obvious and serious character flaws could cost the University of Alabama another 10 years of misery. It’s disturbing to observe Alabama supporters embracing a man with such a lack of class. Saban and the University of Alabama is the prefect marriage between two desperate individuals. The University of Alabama is the rich old groom and Nick Saban is the young bride with a nice face and big breast. Alabama fans best hope that this “trophy wife” is not just a cheap thrill.
